Great piece. I used to work in a used bookstore in Bristol, UK for five years. I saw everything from 1930s First Edition Steinbeck to the latest Kathy Lette. We didn't just stack books in piles hoping for the best. We displayed and curated our books carefully. The classic beat authors always sold the best - this was a trendy part of town - and the covers made a huge difference. Take Cannery Row, Steinbeck's classic. The original dust jacket to the hardback is a bit naff. But take it off, and the actual hardback book is a lovely lemon yellow with simple type. Looks great on a display. But would look rubbish on Amazon. So I understand your points. Thanks.
