I'm English and I get this big time. I had an argument once over whether dinner was tea, dinner was supper, or supper was tea.

For me, dinner is in the evening. But for some, dinner is at lunch and tea is in the evening. Whereas supper—a late dinner at say eight in the evening—is for the middle/upper class.

I now live and work in France, where the class distinction is less on the surface. But if you dig deep, it's there. It's just less noticeable.
