It was originally designed for coachman. In the 18th century they weren't allowed to enter inns, so a glass was developed to hang on the coach so the driver could quench his thirst. The wooden stand is a novelty, and you're meant to drink it like a large mug. I take it off and drink it like a test tube. It's really nice beer. And strong, about 8.4%
