2023 — and beyond?
It’s a New Year — Now What?
Ever wondered what you are doing
I’m only two days into 2023, and I’m already thinking. My brain whirring like a broken-down washing machine that’s on a constant spin. Sometimes I have to unplug it to stop it driving me crazy.
I woke up this morning with a cold. Bad timing as I needed to start work today. I’m a groundsman for an estate in Normandy and when I looked at the gardens this morning, the growth has already started. That means for the next eleven months, I’ll be fighting a losing battle against the weeds, grass, shrubs, trees, hedges, brambles and vines. Until it all stops once more in December, and I’m able to relax again.
I’ve been here since 2018, and it’s by far the longest job I’ve ever had. I feel I’ve let myself down. Normally, I take a job, do it for a bit, then quit. It keeps me fresh and alert.
After four years here, I don’t really care any more. Let the weeds grow! They're only weeds, they have a right as much as any other plant. Why not chop down the beans or the roses, or the grapevine or the honeysuckle?
