My aunt and uncle lived in Benoni near Jo-burg. I used to visit some Easters. And my uncle used to cook curry, possibly like your grandfather. It was meat and potatoes, which I hate in curry, but it was hot. And I cried as well. I mean, I didn't, my eyes just hurt because my mouth hurt so much.

Thing is, he washed it down with litres of Castle Lager to numb the pain, we just had Grape Fanta!
