There is only one way to really learn a language (and this is from experience) and that is to speak it. Preferably every day. Either to a native, or to someone who speaks the target language well, or even (yes, and this might be weird) to yourself. Why not, try it!

I’ve lived in France for eight years; I’m an expat, and like most Brit expats we can’t really speak the language. Why? Because we don’t speak it regularly. We may be able to read it, but reading, is relatively simple. Anyway, I only started really speaking French when I started working a few days a week on a farm with a labourer, who spoke zero English. It was amazing, by the third month, I wasn’t fluent, but my level had gone up hugely. Yes, I made mistakes, but it didn’t matter, I got the work done and we conversed well on all sorts of topics. I now go to his house for dinner. And once I’ve had a bottle of good red, I’m speaking like Victor Hugo himself.
