This is totally correct. Everyone thinks they can rock up on medium, pay their sub, write and earn a load of dosh. Why should you?

I used to write for magazines in the UK in my 30s. It's hard work, hard graft, you learn the craft. I used to write articles, and they were rejected by the editors. Some of my colleagues were never rejected. They were probably better writers (for that medium). People try to write on Medium and wonder why they aren't making money. It's not that they aren't good writers, it's because they haven't figured out the craft yet. It takes time. And I'm still learning as well.
