Use Speechify On Medium to Proofread Your Work Before You Publish

I’ve never written about helping other people on Medium because I’ve never had anything original to say. So if this is my one and only tip, I hope it helps.

Mixed Up Words

I get a lot of words mixed up. Always have done. I’m a lot better than I used to be, but there are still words I have problems distinguishing between. Like these.

  • then/than
  • with/where
  • there/their
  • get/can
  • what/want
  • they/there
  • your/you’re

I’m probably not alone. Many have the same difficulty, but it doesn’t mean you can’t write, or are bad at writing. On the contrary, you might be a brilliant writer.

When I read through text, I often can’t see there’s a mistake. Two words can appear the same. I can’t distinguish between them.

When I realized I had this difficulty, I started reading my work out to myself. It helped, but it wasn’t perfect. Sometimes I just read the word as I saw it.

For example, I would write down ‘The War on What,’ — A clear mistake! — but read it out as ‘The War on Want’, and so not realize the error.
