When I lived in Granada, I was stunned by a guy who told me that the best way to avoid strays coming back to the city, was to take them to the Sierra Nevada mountains and break their legs. The thought always occurred to me, why didn't you just kill them there and then. But I never asked as I was too scared. Maybe things have changed. Not that the practice didn't occur elsewhere, of course.
