You walked right up my street, and knocked on the door. Genesis were just one of the prog rock bands I loved growing up - even though I grew up in the 80s and 90s.
Genesis were one but there were so many: Caravan, Faust, Can, Camel, ELP, Gong King Crimson, Yes, to name a few.
For many Duke signalled the end of Genesis. The end of that weird, very English, very private school folky mythical sound that was unique. True, it was long and sometimes not particularly exciting at times. Hardly dance material. But it was special. And can you imagine getting a record deal and pumping out albums these days?
Saying that Duke is a great album, and so is Invisible Touch. Land of Confusion and The Brazilian are fantastic.
The 13/8 was often used by prog bands to give a slightly unstable feel to the rhythm as the last beat in the bar feels like it's cut off. It's why it's difficult to dance to. Pearl Jam used it twice on YIELD on Low light, and, Push me pull me. Again gives on uneasy feeling. Hard to dance to?
That's it.
Great piece!
